Detoxify the Ayurvedic way

Sluggish digestion? Skin looking dull? Feeling bloated and lethargic? It’s time to do an easy Ayurvedic detox.
Whether you’re looking for an immediate mind-body reset or aiming to prevent future health woes, this four-day Ayurvedic cleanse is a powerful way to eliminate toxins, which come from incomplete digestion.

One of the best times to do this is as the seasons are changing to get rid of that sluggish feeling and finally grab life with both hands. So, what are you waiting for?

How it works

You’ll eat three times a day with minimal (ideally, no) snacking, giving your digestive system a break between meals.
Every time you do eat, do so until you’re satisfied. Make lunch your biggest meal and dinner your lightest, so that your body can optimally process food before bedtime.
Ayurvedic super herbs and a detox dish called Kitchari (which is made up of rice, mung beans and spices) will be key in your routine. We recommend making a big batch at the start of your detox, and feel free to add some vegetables in it to vary the flavours. As well as being delicious, Kitchari:

  • eliminates accumulated toxins from the body and mind
  • aids healthy digestion and restores regular bowel movements
  • removes heaviness or congestion in the body
  • improves energy and vitality
  • boosts overall health

How your day looks:

Start your day

Breakfast

  • Eat a simple breakfast; either plain oats and nut milk or water, or if you're not put off by too much flavour in the morning, a bowl of Kitchari.

  • Practice eating mindfully - take three deep breaths before you eat, and focus on every mouthful. Eat until you are no longer hungry, rather than till you feel really full.

  • Enjoy a walk outside (maybe you can walk to the office!) or do some yoga/movement.

  • Drink a cup of green tea if you want to and be sure to drink more water throughout the day.

Afternoon

  • For each of the four days, lunch is a simple Kitchari. Make sure you prepare a large, wholesome bowlful, to keep you satisfied until your next meal.

  • Again, eat mindfully!

  • Have another cup of herbal tea, if you fancy it.

  • Where possible, avoid snacking; sipping warm water or herbal tea throughout the day can really help with hunger pangs and also improves digestion. However, if you’re hungry between meals, don’t deprive yourself. We recommend snacking on almonds that have been soaked overnight - they’re filling, easy on your digestive system and delicious too. Fresh fruit, like a green apple, is a good option too!

  • Practice yoga for 20-60 minutes.

 Evening

  • Eat dinner: Each day, dinner is Kitchari again. Eat at least two hours before bedtime to give your body enough time to digest.

  • Wind down by reading inspirational books, writing in a journal or meditating. You could even enjoy a relaxing massage with warm oils.

  • Go to bed early enough to get 8 hours of sleep.

What’s next?

When you wrap up the cleanse, it’s tempting to go out for a celebratory pizza and drinks. But why undo all your hard work and potential weight loss? After detox diets, it’s also easy to shock your system so keep up the healthy choices.

The cleansing process continues for several days after you finish the plan, so go easy on your body and mind as you transition back to your regular routine.
